Environmental Sustainability Update

Sustainability is important to TreeHouse Foods shareholders, employees and the communities in which we operate. Our environmental focus drives the operating culture of our plants, whose teams strive to conserve energy and water, minimize waste and emissions, and promote the reuse of natural resources.  Simply said, our employees are committed to environmental sustainability every day.
Our 2017 focus was to advance our culture of sustainability. We transitioned from forming and communicating to executing and delivering results through goal setting, reporting and continuous improvement. Our key accomplishments in 2017 include:
  • Reduced 36MM kilowatt-hours of energy consumption, while reducing our energy intensity 3.4%.
  • Increased to 15 of our facilities operating as zero-waste-to-landfill plants.
  • Reduced by over 2%. greenhouse gas emissions intensity
  • Certified our Princeton, Kentucky facility as a US EPA Energy Star operation. Recertified operations in South Beloit, Illinois and Tonawanda, New York.
  • Established and organized sustainability champions at each plant and throughout the organization.
  • Formalized regular communication channels for sharing metrics and best practices across the organization.
TreeHouse Foods’ environmental sustainability goals as we move toward 2020 are to:                     
  • Develop a proactive approach to compliance through enhanced spill prevention programs
  • Reduce our environmental footprint through
    • 3% per year reductions in energy and water intensity
    • 75% of our facilities operating as zero-waste-to-landfill plants
    • 10% of our sewer waste diversion to renewable sources
    • Reduced greenhouse gas emission

  • Improving packaging processes to eliminate superfluous packing material and leverage eco-friendly materials
  • Promoting sustainable growing practices that simplify our supply chain and reduce our environmental footprint
